@Jonathan Harford: That’s why the ability to rip/backup is so important. DVD shrink will take care of those unskippable ads very nicely.

@MaxRC: “I can rip(/backup) it!” is a good enough reason for me. Plus, there’s the fact that plain vanilla DVD, while maybe doesn’t look as good as the high-def ones, is “good enough”. Hell, frankly, I thought VHS was good enough — the main reason I upgraded to DVD was random access and the ability to play on my computer.

Then again, I still have an SDTV, so maybe I’m just not the target audience for this sort of thing.

HD Format war aside…

Buy an HD player. DON’T rebuy the DVDs you already own… just watch them upscaled on your HD player. DO buy new movies on HD. Over time you will have a nice HD collection and you weren’t “forced” to rebuy anything that you didn’t want to.

At that point the only problem is ripping HD discs to a portable player (if that’s something you actually care to do), but let’s be honest: things aren’t exactly “perfect” in DVD land when it comes to ripping either. Lots of discs make you jump through hoops to get past zero cells and what have you. Handbrake forum is full of threads about what discs can or cannot be ripped.
