Question of the Day: HDTV or SDTV

Posted in Live (December 27, 2007 at 11:34 pm)

It’s debatable how I should answer… I have an HDTV (one) with an up-scaling DVD/network player (Helios) and XBox 360. However, my esteemed cable company wants to charge an arm and a left nut to replace the cable box with an HD one. So even the supposedly HD stations still hit me as SD. And, since someone else also mentioned laziness, I do have the cable feed split so it can directly feed my HDTV and I can get some HD channels that way, but I’m too lazy to bother. Frankly, I’ve almost given up on TV (and movies) lately. Hollywood, et all, just sucks, so I’ve been sticking to music. Older music, because the newer stuff is mostly heartless nonsense. I think I’ll read a book now, thank you very much.

where is the option of both HDTV and SDTV? most people that have an hdtv will prolly have both.

in my home we have 1 65″ sdtv (its about 5-6 years old, still works amazingly well)

a recently purchased 47″ hdtv, and about 5 other sdtv sets in the actual house, and about 2 more in the garage. (we have one in each room, except maybe bathrooms)

plan on getting an hdtv of at least 65″ to complement that old sdtv though… dont plan on replacing it since it still works great.

We have two kids, 4 and 6, a Wii and a PS3, and often the TV is either off or just streaming music.

@luckypictures: Most of those aren’t used. Only 1 HDTV and 2 SDTV’s are used. The rest are either collectibles (B&W Tv’s) or are just sets that are still good that I couldn’t bare to throw away.

No SD or HD TV in our house. 24inch iMac and a 22 inch monitor for my 360. We watch movies via netflix and watch TV on the network’s websites.

Also would be useful to note that we have a TiVo S3 which makes the lack of urgency to watch possible. We can watch whatever whenever and save time by skipping commercials.

Basically three sitcoms in about an hour would be a heavy night of TV watching for us, after the kids are in bed of course.

This poll is kinda pointless. Its obvious that a poll on a tech/gadget website will be skewed towards the latest and greatest technology, thats why we all surf this site right? My folks have an SDTV at home and they dont surf gizmodo, becuase they dont care about latest and greatest technology. Its like asking which car is better, Honda or Chevy, on a honda website.

That being said I have a 32″ Westinghouse LCD TV that I bought ~3 years ago. I too have comcrap cable and spend a majority of my time watching seinfeld and King of queens reruns in SDTV becuase of the writers strike. Can someone explain to me how comcrap doesnt have A&E HD yet? please?
