@Crazysamz: Embedded advertisement creates revenues that are more than enough to pay for servers, personel and bandwidth.
The fact that people believe live service should cost money is the reason it still does.

live isn’t meant to be free HVEDHRUNGR, it’s cost is to cover for the servers, the maintenance, the workers, etc. I’ll pay for live as long as I want, and I have been now for 3 years. What’s better, the expensive console the parents don’t want to buy for their kids, or the cheaper consoles with a moderate price tag for an online service that they may or may not have wanted to use in the first place. Higher console price= not as many sales, even if it comes with a free online service, because most parents don’t know/care about the free online service in the first place.

Live services will eventually have to be free.
Currently, I’m left to wonder whether this will increase the console price tag in the next generations.
Part of the reason why the Wii sells so well is the price tag. Part of why the PS3 didn’t, is the price tag.

With free live services from the start (considering that internet connection carries a fee of its own), how much loss can the companies take on console sales?
With three companies on the market (and Nintendo looks set to stay), consumers can hope for a bargain battle eventually. Question is, who can take it how far?
