@NFMoto: And BetaMax was clearly the better videotape format.

Look where it got them…

@QSRV: Good point but I have yet to see this size “advantage” do anything for me.

@PlasmaMachine: Yea but is it 3X better? And are you going to get a couple copies at $30 because you can’t back them up to protect them from your kids? Will the kids even care or notice? Do your kids wath these movies on loop on a 1080p TV or the 7″ one in the car or the 13″ one in the kitchen?
I will agree on the burner front. It seems like there are more Bluray burners out there.
Personally DVD’s took off when the price was under $200 for players AND computer burners AND there was software to Back up the movies. This would move people to Bluray as the movies are like 20Gb a piece.

@dna: Pixar movies, as opposed to Dreamworks movies are truly unique. They have original music, characters, stories, etc. Some of Disney’s early movies were great, yes. But their recent stuff is horrendous. Badly done. Shortly before Disney bought Pixar, Steve Jobs rightly criticized Disney movies for pretty much sucking worse than anything else out there.

Dreamwork, on the other hand, uses stilted old ideas, pop music and tired old themes, and just plain stupid ideas (Treasure Planet? Please!). Shrek, though pretty good, also lacked the level of creativity that makes Pixar films unique. Maybe some of Pixar’s films don’t have replayability like Snow White, but some do. I know of plenty of families where the kids play Monsters Inc. and Finding Nemo over and over again. I suspect Rattatooie is going to be another.

As for the Warner Annoucement, this is great news! I’m going home and watching my new 5-disc Blu ray version of Blade Runner tomorrow, glad I bought a Sony Blu-ray player.

@PlasmaMachine: Funny.
I think there are more Bluray fanboy’s because they think size matters for some reason and they are trying to justify their PS3 purchase. Sad.
@Seiven: My parents have no idea what you are talking about.

@Seiven: Yeah, in fact the Blu-Ray announcement by Warner may have made my decision to buy a burner easier. Sony has a 4X for sale now. Go to sonystyle.com and check it out [www.sonystyle.com]

At least alot of the good Paramount movies may end up on BRD since the HD-DVD exclusivity deal is only for a year longer. By that time, BRD should dominate and Paramount will have no choice.

@QSRV: excellent…for those of us early adopters faster burners is good news. but I still think HDDVD will win out based on the multiple non standardized profiles in BR. when they standardize the players to include all features and we see all discs 2.0 profile THEN I will declare Blu-Ray the victor…untill then reg DVD is kicking both of their asses. I think early adopters are all on one side or another and this next year will see a push for the average Joe to choose one or the other.

Joe Public (i.e. not the passionate geeks) cares not for the minutiae of each format, they simply want to know which one format to buy. This year will see one format becoming victorious and the loser being dropped like a hot potato in the retailers, leaving the one true format to rule them all. This, like DVD before it will see prices tumble to a sensible level. HD DVD will be a dim memory and used in the same breath as Betamax.

I’ve never looked too deeply into the subject, but Blu Ray has always seemed like the winner to me.
