Sprint Updates Mac OS X EV-DO Card Drivers, Adds GPS

Posted in Live (January 6, 2008 at 7:17 pm)

Sprint has issued new Mac drivers for their Novatel EV-DO Rev A products. This update adds compatibility with Mac OS X Leopard, and its WWAN framework. The update brings the Sprint EV-DO support to version 2.0.

The update also adds Sprint location support to Mac OS, so that you can use your Sprint mobile broadband card as a GPS device. The software is fully Mac-integrated, and works as a standard GPS device. It also works with Google Earth Plus for live GPS tracking. Furthermore, Sprint is offering GPS services at no charge, a departure from previous plans for the company’s mobile broadband GPS solution.

The update is not perfect however. Due to bugs in Mac OS X Leopard, the WWAN interface does not display signal status. This appears to be a bug on Apple’s end with integrating the WWAN framework into the new network configuration. With Mac OS X 10.5.2 already in testing, Apple may have a fix for this soon, if not in time for Macworld expo, which PhoneNews.com will be providing full, live coverage of on-site.
