Sprint Confirms XOHM WiMAX Eee PC, OQO

Posted in Live (January 8, 2008 at 8:44 pm)

Sprint today made official what was demonstrated at CES yesterday: The company will be carrying WiMAX-enabled versions of ASUS’s Eee PC, and OQO’s Model 02 Ultra Mobile PCs, when the carrier launches their XOHM 4G wireless service, later this year.

At CES, Sprint is demonstrating a prototype version of the OQO with WiMAX installed, though the features and software are demonstrative in nature. The Model 02 will be largely unchanged from the present version, though it is not clear exactly how WiMAX will be added to the unit (for example, if it will exist alongside the existing optional EV-DO support).

Even more vague, is ASUS’s Eee PC, which was announced, but not demonstrated. ASUS committed to shipping various WiMAX devices in 2008, though only committed specifically to a version of the Eee PC. This was done in concert with Intel, and ASUS’s formal embracing of WiMAX technology at CES.

Sprint did not add new details as to when, or where, WiMAX would launch later this year.
